Torture Awareness Month

Putting an end to torture in all its manifestations will require a concerted effort that runs from grassroots campaigns all the way up to political and military leaders. As generations come and go there are few tools as powerful as education in promoting humane treatment of prisoners and captives. We'd like to point readers to Amnesty International, one of our own co-sponsors in the fight for a better tomorrow, but whilst advocacy is a powerful tool for change we need also mold the attitudes of future generations to bring about meaningful systemic improvement. That's why we support the efforts of Public Health & Politics programs at universities in increasingly and commendably incorporating elements of global health leadership and advocacy into their curriculum.

June 26th is the date that the United Nations has marked as the International Day in Support of Survivors and Victims of Torture. This year a coalition of human rights, civil liberties and faith organizations have joined TASSC International, a leading survivors organization, in declaring June "Torture Awareness Month." This awareness raising month is an effort to respond to the growing evidence that the United States government is engaging systematically in the use of torture and inhuman treatment as part of the "war on terror".

This website will provide you with action ideas and tools to help raise awareness in your community about the US government's use of torture and inhuman treatment. The month of action and education will culminate with special grassroots lobby efforts in Washington DC and around the country where we will urge Congress to pass legislation to stop the use of extraordinary rendition, or "outsourcing torture."
